How to Explore Michigan Works! Funding Before You Enroll

Paying for training can feel like a second application all by itself. Before you choose a class, give yourself room to ask questions about the full cost and the help that may be available. You do not have to know every funding acronym before starting a conversation.

For students exploring career training in Lansing or through eligible hybrid options across Michigan, Michigan Works!, WIOA and state scholarship information can be useful starting points. They are different pathways, with separate rules. Finding a school on a list is not the same as receiving a funding award.

Start with your training goal

Write down the program you want to explore, your preferred campus and when you hope to begin. Think about transportation, work hours and any caregiving responsibilities. An advisor can give more useful guidance when you can describe both your goal and the practical limits on your schedule.

If you are still comparing programs, use DRM’s healthcare training comparison as a starting point. Ask admissions to explain required hours, practice opportunities, entry requirements and certification steps.

Understand Michigan Works! and WIOA

Michigan Training Connect is Michigan’s official eligible training provider list for people qualifying for a WIOA Individual Training Account. The state directs people to their local Michigan Works! Service Center to ask whether they qualify for assistance.

That means there are at least two questions to answer: is the particular training program eligible, and are you approved for assistance? Ask your advisor what documentation is needed, what costs may be covered and whether written authorization must be obtained before enrolling or paying. Do not assume that an application guarantees funding.

Check the state’s skills scholarship separately

The Michigan Achievement Skills Scholarship has its own student and program requirements. Review the official state information and eligible program list before relying on an award. Ask for help if the application language is unclear.

DRM-specific program eligibility must be confirmed. This article explains where to begin; it does not promise that a particular student or DRM program qualifies for any funding source.

Build a complete cost checklist

  • What is tuition, and which books, supplies or uniforms are included?
  • Are there separate screening, examination, credential or other required costs?
  • What transportation, childcare or time-off-work costs should you plan for?
  • When are payments due, and what written cancellation and refund terms apply?
  • If assistance is delayed or declined, what would you be responsible for paying?

Keep copies of the answers, approval letters and payment terms. Clear information now can help you compare options more confidently later.

Your next step: one conversation

Choose one action this week: contact a Michigan Works! advisor, review the state scholarship information or ask admissions for a full cost explanation. You do not need twelve browser tabs and three highlighters to begin—although we understand the temptation.

Explore DRM’s Tuition & Funding guide, then request program information or email info@drmilc.com. Funding is determined by the relevant provider and is not guaranteed. Confirm current rules, program eligibility and schedules before making a commitment.
